About Us

Maman Zari is a restaurant in the Albany Park neighborhood of Chicago that serves a tasting menu inspired by Persian cuisine and adapted to today's palate. Named for the owner’s beloved grandmother, the menu draws inspiration from flavors and dishes that originated in the lands that were once a part of the Persian empire. The changing menu treats diners to an abundance of the fresh herbs that brighten up the region and the red gold saffron that has long been a cultivated crop there.

At Maman Zari, the goal is to expand peoples’ idea of Persian food. Inspired by her upbringing, familiar stories over dinner, and extensive travels in Iran, Mariam has teamed up with Executive Chef Matteo to provide their guests with a taste of all that she experienced. At Maman Zari, you’ll be transported.

Matteo Lo Bianco -
Executive Chef/Co-Owner

Chef Matteo Lo Bianco is from just outside of Milan, Italy. With his formal training from Vallesana in Sondrio, Lombardy, and decades of experience, Lo Bianco brings a mix of skills to the kitchen at Maman Zari. Previously heading the kitchens at restaurants in the area such as Volare and Stefani Prime, he’s also been able to flex his technical muscles in corporate and R&D kitchens. Mariam Shahsavarani -
Co-Owner

Despite the attire and clear childhood aspirations, you’ll find Mariam just about anywhere except for the kitchen here at Maman Zari.

Born in Chicago, Mariam spent her late teens and early twenties traveling in Iran with her grandfather. Her childhood was spent in a multi-generational household, made up of her American-born mother and Iranian-born father, as well as her Iranian grandparents, where food was the common language. As a result, she loves to witness people enjoying and bonding over meals at the restaurant.
